Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection Supports for Applicants for International Protection

Applicants for International Protection can receive the following services and supports from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection:

 Personal Public Services Number

A Personal Public Services Number (PPSN) is required to access public services and financial supports.

Applications for PPSNs can be made at the person’s local PPSN Registration Centre.

Daily Expenses Allowance

Applicants for International Protection who live in accommodation provided by the Department of Justice & Equality are entitled to receive Daily Expenses Allowance.

The rate of the allowance is €38.80 per week for an adult and €29.80 per week for a child.

 Exceptional Needs Payments

An Exceptional Needs Payment is a single payment to help meet essential, once-off, exceptional expenditure, which a person could not reasonably be expected to meet out of their weekly income.

Applicants for International Protection may be entitled to a payment under the Exceptional Needs Payment scheme, for example for clothing, baby items or transport costs to necessary appointments.  The amount of payment depends on a means test and the type of assistance required.

 Access to the Public Employment Service

Applicants for International Protection who have permission to access the labour market may access the Department’s Public Employment Service through the Department’s Intreo Centre network where Case Officers will assist, guide and support these clients in their job seeking efforts and/or educational needs.
