About the Centre
The Borrisokane Accommodation Centre opened in 2019 for families and individuals who are in the International Protection process (also known as ‘asylum seekers’). People seek asylum because they are fleeing persecution in their home country or because they would be at risk of serious harm if they returned to their home country.
Families will move into the centre on a phased basis while their international protection claims are being examined. It is anticipated that approximately 16 families will live in the centre while their claims for asylum are being examined.
Investing in the local community
Following a call for expressions of interest for accommodation placed in the national media last year, the premises in Borrisokane was offered to the then Department of Justice and Equality by Double M Investments Ltd.
Significant refurbishment work has since been carried out including improvements to the residential units, the anchor commercial unit and offices. Materials and sub-contractors have been sourced locally and over half a million euro has been spent by the contractor on the refurbishment.
As part of the development, a new supermarket opened in Borrisokane. The supermarket is available to all residents in the town and will offer employment to approximately 20 people from the local area, while also boosting the local economy.
The accommodation is comprised of 16 homes: 3 town houses and 13 apartments. All accommodation is own door and will give families the privacy and space necessary for normal day-to-day family activities.
Becoming part of the community
Integration has hugely positive effects for both communities and centres alike by increasing friendships and understanding, while also building a richer multicultural community.
A Friends of the Centre group has been established in the Borrisokane Accommodation Centre. This initiative brings residents, community and voluntary groups together with a view to increasing integration opportunities and providing for the development of greater community linkages with the local residents and the centre.
